The southern Appalachia region is among the poorest, most isolated and remote areas in the country. Western North Carolina has a minority population of Native Americans, African Americans and Hispanics, as well as groups with lower income-to poverty level ratios. Social determinants of health (SDOH) are identified as root causes of medical problems--poverty being the greatest contributor. WNC Lighthouse Inc. incorporates a multi-faceted approach to help families address social determinants of health, including food and housing insecurities, lack of transportation, interpersonal violence and others, and connect them with other community resources.
